Thanks for the reply Toronto.
I have never bought or replaced a processor before. I assume I can buy a processor from pretty much anywhere - do you have any tips or things to watch out for when buying an upgraded processor?
Also, are there other obvious things that can be upgraded on the XPS system to improve performance? I have 2Gb RAM 533Mhz and an 8800GT 512Mb on XP.

read the xps 600 manual , buy some arctic silver to apply to the new processor , ground yourself when changing parts , if u search theres forums or google there is lots of advice on swapping procs.. if u post a new question in this forum on how to change processors many will help. u can add 1 more gig of ram , u could buy another 8800gt card and a sli bridge , or buy the latest nvidia card {9800} . u should not need a pro fan for the new proc use the one in your PC now. upgrade to XP service Pack 3 when its released next week i read.

I've been reading around and checking places like Toms Hardware processor comparison charts, ebay prices, etc, and it seems there's not that much difference between the 960 and the EE.
What is the real advantage of the Extreme Edition, verses the 960? If i'm limited to 667Mhz memory, would I even realize the EE benefits?
Would I see that much of a difference between the 830 I have now and the 960?

A Pentium Extreme Edition will give u a faster bus speed u are stuck with 677 ram.. u can only install a PD or THe 965 EE thats the fastest u can go..core2duo are not compatible. my friend has a xps 600 with a PEE 965 and 677 ram.. raptor hard drives 8800GT cards , the only game he has a problem with is crysis.. he can play the game on the lowest game settings.. crysis is a hardware demanding game. there are still some OEM EE 965 on the market if u google them.. if u decide to upgrade stick with a 960 or PEE 965.Message Edited by Toronto699 on 03-29-2008 09:38 AMMessage Edited by Toronto699 on 03-29-2008 09:41 AMToronto699

Conroe will not work in the XPS 600 no matter what bios u have , make another post in the XPS Forums something like this "XPS 600 and Conroe" the voltage regularors in the XPS 600 will not allow the conroe to work k in an xps 600 , its a harware limitation of the XPS 600 motherboard why conroe will not work its unsupported by the motherboardI did some poking around, and there are several threads here that suggest that the Conroe processor might work for XPS 600's with newer BIOS (A09 I think), but Chris the DELL guy on this forum seems to say that this is coincidental and that there is no direct support in the BIOS for this.

I suggest u open a new forum and ask just to be sure i know im correct no conroe for XPS 600 .. while im at it the XPS 720 does not support penryn quad cores
