1394 dropout....
Hi!
I have a Latitude 810 and a Latitude 840 with the same problem. I'm using them for video editing, and the editing system is Avid XpressDV 3.5.3.
When I try to play out to the camera or to a DV-deck, I get "dropouts" every minute. Even when I just look at the LCD-monitor on my camera, whitout recording, I'll see the dropouts.
The dropouts takes place every minute.
There is no problem when I record/digitize.
I have tried to reinstall the computer several times, tried with and without SP1, with several different cameras and DV-decks.....!
Help....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi
I will see if I can replicate the problem with my equipment. I may use some other software, but if it is XP or the system itself the problem should show.
In the mean time I suggest you do all the Windows updates, check your BIOS version is the latest and of course try another (hi quality?!) cable. You should also try to disable all extra devices, like IR-port, Com-ports, CD-Rom, modem. You may also want to disable Speedstep.

Hi..
Done some testing with my C810.
(BIOS A11, XP SP1 + all SP1 post fixes via Windows Update. Infra red and smart-cpu disabled in BIOS). New IBM 60GB drive (4200 rpm).
Sendt a 2gb file back via Firewire to the Sony DCR-PC210E, and the playback looks smooth and nice. No problem. Using XP's Movie maker 2.0!
Think I will try it on my C840 now....

Hi
Got feedback from another with the same problem on a C840.
He had positive feedback on my suggestion;
- "disable the firewire network adapter" in device manager.....
- Set BIOS power settings to "Disable Smart CPU" and "Max Performance" under the Speed Step settings...
hope it works ;)

BTW.. be sure to turn of your screensaver. Seen reports of dorpouts due to high cpu utilization when using a screensaver!

The problem is with the WiFi card. It tries to discover a nearby network every 68.5 seconds (nearly the minute that you mention, McNuss). I timed the dropouts on my machine and they occur almost exactly every 68.5 seconds (the differences are due to human sampling error). When I use a 3rd party instrumentation app, I also see a spike on the System process at exactly the moments that I hear a dropout, when playing MP3's from a Firewire-enclosed hard drive.
When you disable the driver in Device Manager (not just the radio using Client Manager), then the dropouts will disappear. I'm sure this will be an acceptable solution when playing audio/video to a camera, since it's unlikely that you will be surfing the Internet while doing so....

One other thing. I didn't need to disable any other devices (IR, COM, Modem, Firewire Net) or change the Smart CPU settings in BIOS, so this is a solution that is easily implemented and reversed when necessary, without requiring a restart.270

I have tried to reinstall the C840 (OS, drivers), but I dit NOT install Avid.
Instead I installed MS MovieMaker 2.0..... And, I experienced the same
problem !!!!!!!
Help..... please someone...!!
