Awfully slow startup
On my taskbar i have some items that i believe cause the computer to start slow....
one of them is the icon for "local Area Connection"
the other one is "Norton-Antivirus Auto-Protect Disabled"
I want to get rid of them....Is it possible NOT to make these start at the the beginning and eat up my system resources??

- yavuzz,
Try the following.
1. Go to START | RUN and type "msconfig" (without the quotes) in the "Open" box; click on "OK".
2. Click on the Startup tab and remove all checks EXCEPT for :
ScanRegistry,
TaskMonitor,
PCHealth,
SystemTray,
LoadPowerProfile,
SynTPLpr,
SynTPEnh,
LoadPowerProfile.
Don't worry if all are not present.
3. Click on "OK". You will be prompted to REBOOT. Allow your system to reboot.
4. After the system has restarted, see if the problem still occurs.
If the problem still occurs, then you can put all the checks back in MSCONFIG, because your startup is not the problem.
If the problem no longer occurs, go back into msconfig, and recheck the items in startup one at a time.
You will need to click OK and REBOOT after each item is checked to test if that item is the cause of the problem.
Thank you for choosing Dell.

This will be a good time for me to jump into this thread and ask if there is a similar way to turn off items for Win2k Pro.

- tlsullivan,
To clean the startup folder Windows uses at boot.
Right-click on the Start button and click on Explore.
Double-click on Programs in the right-hand window, then on Startup.
Delete any shortcuts from this folder that you do not need to start automatically as Windows boots.
If you are not sure about the item, you can drag it onto your desktop instead of deleting it.
Close this window and restart your system to see if the startup is faster.
Thank you for choosing Dell.

John M. Please could you explain what placing a program in the Startup folder actually does? I know it takes longer for Windows to load if one has a lot of programs in the Startup folder, but the actual programs in the Startup folder don't seem to run- there are no windows open on the desktop for example. As far as I can tell those programs are not doing anything. Does it mean they are quicker to open when you really need them? Should I leave the antivirus software program enabled in the startup folder?
Sorry for very basic question. I would appreciate an explanation though.
Richard

the Norton program would be very well what it is.. open NORTON, go under the options, and there is a checkbox to "Load at startup" uncheck it.
