Bitlocker recovery key
My Dell Latitude E6430 with Windows 7 Enterprise Service Pack 1 and Microsoft Office 2010 has worked fine for 3 years, and was working fine on Saturday night when I logged off. But when I tried to log on the next morning it would not start - it says 'The system boot information has changed since Bitlocker was enabled. You must supply a Bitlocker recovery key to start this system.'
I have no idea why this has happened. I had never heard of Bitlocker before this happened, and am not in the habit of fiddling around with my laptop's settings. I do not have a recovery key, and don't know where to find one. Microsoft tell me it is the manufacturer, not them, who will have to supply it. Can anyone tell me how to get it?

Thank you. The laptop is for academic research rather than business, but it was indeed set up by an IT department, at an English university. They're trying to locate the key, but it's beginning to look as if they may not be able to, due to the fact that it is 3 years since they set it up for me., and because I don't actually work for that university, and am geographically a little distant from them as well. Though if I can travel there to take the laptop in physically that might possibly make a difference.
Do you have any idea why my laptop should suddenly start demanding a bitlocker key? What went wrong?

If this is a business system set up by an IT staff at your organization, best would be to contact them. If not, the only solution to a lost bitlocker key is a reload of everything - hopefully you have a backup of the data on the system, because without the bitlocker key, it's lost forever otherwise.
