Cannot Log onto Windows with existing profile and domain
Hello,
I have an old Dell Lattitude C840, XP Professional. Recently, when I tried to log onto Windows with my usual user name and password it said: "The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case." I know for a fact that I'm not messing up the user name and password. I've had the computer for 6 years. One thing is the domain is still the network from school, but that has not caused any trouble in the past. I graduated two years ago. There is another domain to log onto: Owner-with a bunch of numbers beside it, but I do not know the password or user name to this. How do I bypass this and get into my computer to fix this problem? Is my profile corrupted? Any help or advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've actually just now pinpointed the problem. Some of the keys in the laptop keyboard do not function and one of those keys happen to be in my password thus inabling my password from logging me on. The keyboards for the latitudes are not available anymore so I guess I'm on the hunt for an external keyboard. Thank you for your help though.

Could be a corrupt profile or corrupt SAM (it's not inconceivable that a system of this age could have a hard drive that's showing signs of failure).
Try booting in safe mode (F8 at powerup).
