Inspiron 8600 startup problem
Symptoms: When I push the Power Button, the lights come on for 5 seconds and then go off. That is it. Nothing happens beyond that.
I've read up a lot on this problem, and in most cases the advice is to replace the motherboard.
And I would have done it by now if it were not for the fact that 1 time out of 20 the computer does start and I can even run diagnostic tests on it (those tests do not show any problems).
So what is it? Faulty motherboard, lightpipe, or something else?
Thank you for your responces.

- Thank you for your reply. I think I will just go ahead and buy a new motherboard.Question: how / where do I look up the Part Numbers on Dell.com? For example, I need to look up the description for Dell part # F5236 and Dell Part # X1070 -- how do I do that?Or at least, would someone tell me the difference between these two boards? My 8600 is the one with all those ports in the back (serial. parallel). What Part # am I looking for?Thank you.
- Yes, but is there a place on the web or Dell.com where I can get descriptions of similar parts (not only motherboards) for my purposes? For example, I have come across two different keyboards (different Part Numbers also) for the same laptop (Ispiron 8600) on Ebay. The seller gives me the part numbers and doesn't give me the description of how these keyboards are different.I would like to find a place on the web where I can get Part #s of my laptops components along with their descriptions.I appreciate your help.

Message Edited by andkhl on 02-15-2007 06:03 PM - Thank you for your help.My motherboard part # is X1070. Will I be able to replace it with X1029? How these two are different (both have all the ports in the back... maybe something else then)? There has to be a difference if they are assigned different numbers...If I had an option, should I better buy X1070 or X1029? Which one peforms better?I appreciate all your advice.
