Problem installing Xp on Inspiron 1720
I received my new 1720 on Christmas Eve and after using Vista for a couple of days, found it too slow and annoying for me. I called Dell to make sure that my hardware was compatible, went to the local computer store and purchased a new copy of Xp Home Edition. I have been trying for a week now to install it on the 1720. After approx. 12 hours on the phone with Dell (various depts, and Dell on Call), they gave up and passed me to Microsoft, who in turn said that it was a driver problem and sent me back to Dell.
Dell had already talked me through removing Vista and tried to install Xp several times before they gave up and left me with a blank system. I have tried most of the things that I found on this forum to install Xp, but have had no luck.
I have tried the F6 method with a Floppy to install the Sata drivers, I have used nLite to burn a new copy of Xp with the drivers interrogated, and have still had no luck. The computer will not boot from the new Cd containing the drivers. It will still boot from the original Xp cd, but of course I get a blue screen an error message. (0000006)
Any idea what I am doing wrong?
- Does your copy of XP have SP2 pre-installed in it? It should say on the CD.I don't know why your CD that you slipstreamed the drivers into didn't work. You might want to review instructions here on creating a bootable CD with the software slipstreamed into it. The instructions will also cover how to update the distribution with SP2 if it isn't already.Hope this helps.
- are you going to keep media direct?
if yes you first need to boot from the mediadirect cd to prepare your hdd then install xp (using f6 to load the sata driver when requested).
if no, did you delete all your partitions>repartition>format then install xp. - Unfortunately, I didnt read the last message until after I had Xp installed, so I didnt boot from the Media Direct disk first. I will be looking for a fix for that mistake.I finally created a bootible cd with the R154200 Sata driver on it and ran that first, then loaded the Xp cd next and it actually worked. Xp is up and running!I still have couple of unresolved items. Two are in the device manager under Unknown Devices, BCM2045 & Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus. I have tried to update drivers, but get the message "Windows can not find the neccessary software". I am not even sure what these are.The only other problem that I have found is that I cant get the blue tooth mouse to work. The blue tooth light is on, but the mouse doesnt want to do anything. I have reinstalled the software that came with it, but I am not sure if it was correct for Xp. It didnt work very well in Vista either. I had to reload the mouse software everytime I restarted the computer. Maybe I should just switch to a reg. USB wireless one.Thank you for help. Dell told me that it couldnt be done and wanted me to return the computer and buy a 1520. I already had a 6400, so that didnt make much sense. Glad that I stumbled across the forums.
- I guess the obvious thing is you got the drivers here. The high-definition audio is the audio driver.You did load the chipset drivers? That picks up a host of things.Do you have a bluetooth control panel entry. Can you put it in discovery mode on both the laptop and mouse at the same time? Do they see each other? There's a driver for the 355 bluetooth adapter in Vista but I don't see one for XP. That may be an issue.
- I found out that the BCM2045 in device manager was for the bluetooth & Dell tells me that the Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus has something to do with the dial up modem. From what they tell me, neither of these can be used with XP. I dont use dial up and I can live without bluetooth so this wont be an issue.I have found that the screen resolution is not great and I am not sure why. I have double checked the drivers and I have all of the ones that are on the 1720 XP download page, and have checked settings they are all set to the highest resolution. Dell hardware dept. has also tried to correct it by updating the bios, but it really is not any better. It is usable, but the edges of letters are a little hazy. Does anyone know if there is a fix for this?One more question, is it still possible burn Dvds in XP? I have installed Roxio Creator that came with the computer, and the cd burner works fine, but the entire program did not load, I am guessing that the error message had to do with the dvd part?
- Found a driver that corrected the modem error. It was not for the 1720, but worked.
- Ok, Dell was wrong on just about every question that I had. Xp can be installed and works so much better than Vista did on the Inspiron 1720 and both the modem and Bluetooth devices are now working thanks to information found on this forum and at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870882/en-usFor Bluetooth I had to install driver, R161378 then install R153908 in that order. I have no idea why, but it worked, then go to the above page and follow directions. Last, right click on the icon at bottom of screen, turn on device, and click on add a new bluetooth device.Yeah!!
