Will notebook work without memory module?

I have recently aquired a Dell Inspiron 1000. Windows XP, Intel Celeron. I dont know much more about it because it only stays on for a few minutes before shutting itself off. I inspected it and found that it has no memory module in the back. The troubleshooting guide here at dell.com instructed me to reset the chip, and when I opened the cover, I saw that there was no chip to reset. Could this be why the computer is shutting itself off? Or do I have a bunk battery? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes I have enough time to hit the F2 key, but shortly after the computer shuts itself off again. The memory module in the back (bottom of computer under a face plate) is empty. I see the two silver slides and the bronze colored teeth where a memory module would sit, but its empty. The computer isnt new or anything, I picked it up from a friend.

Anyhow, is this memory module the only source of memory for the computer? Sorry, Im not too brite when it comes to laptops.

can you hit f2 key on bootup, I would say you have to have at least one chip in the slot.

Hi I'm working on a laptop for someone and I encounter a problem where the system will freeze at the windows xp loading screen. So after turning it off and attempting to turn it back on it will flash the caps lock light 10 times then turn off. After reading what others have done, I removed the memory door, and I find no ram modules... Umm... well the computer worked before, since July according to the owner, but now it is having this problem, Unless someone stole the ram out, it was functioning fine until now, so should I have the owner buy a stick of ram and put it in there and see if it works, or is there memeory built in?
