DataZones?
Can someone please explain when to use multiple DataZones?
If I have a two sites, both of them containing a Data Domain, and my requirement is to run backups in both sites and replicate to each other...my first thought is to deploy a storage node in site 2, run local backups at that site through that storage node and let the networker server control replication.
Is that bad practice or breaking licensing policies? Would it be better to create another separate datazone for site two and have two different servers doing backups and controlling replication? Seems like it would be more of a hassle to manage two different server than just putting a storage node or two in the second site.

Two datazones would mean 2 backup servers. If you can manage both sites with one server, then it would be single datazone.
I would use single datazone with media server in each. On site A and B I would have storage node. Site would have devices from DD on site A and site B would have devices from DD on site B. They would clone (replicate) data between using CCR. I would keep my backup server in HA setup between site A and B. In case of loss of site A, backup server would failover to site B and I would continue to use site B storage node for backups and all my restores would be possible using site B storage node and DD devices there (under assumption data needed was replicated).
