Can anyone explain how the Networker DiskBackup Option licensing works in detail? I'd like to use one big (physical) disk device shared between a backup server and a storage node. Each of the nodes will get its own filesystem on the caching device (let's say 400GB each). Will I need two separate DiskBackup Option, Tier 1 (less than 1 TB) licenses or will one license be enough for that case? It seems to me that Networker requires only one license if both cache volumes are mounted on the same server. But how about server and storage node?
DiskBackup Option (DBO) licensing is based on the total disk capacity of all disk storage
subsystems or internal disk pools presented as a backup targets in a single Networker datazone.
A single DiskBackup Option license can enable backup-to-disk for multiple disk volumes
assigned to Networker and associated Storage Nodes.
Previously the NetWorker DiskBackup Option guidelines required that customers have a
single DBO license for each storage subsystem based on the full usable disk capacity
available to a NetWorker Server or Storage Nodes for purposes of backup. This is no longer
valid.
If I remember correctly that has changed in one of 7.x versions and if I'm right now you are licensing total capacity (it doesn't matter where). So, in your case Tier1 should be enough. I remember recently doing some other sort of test with 7.2.x I believe to see something else and if I'm right again, NW is not aware of disk size (storage node does not have ability to see that - at least not yet) so you license only capacity which is used. This means that you could have more than 1TB, but if you stage at right moment so that you never cross over 1TB you won't get into license trouble. At least that is how it behaved during test. Nevertheless, I would not recommend playing with that
