Networker 7.2.2 Performance Question

Hi,

I've got some performance issues with my Networker 7.2.2 Install (Windows 2003, 4 Tape Virtual drives from a CDL). Generally if i've got a lot of jobs running (32) its not too noticable as each virtual drive multiplexes up to 4 save sets, however if only one job is running it will generally only backup at about 2,000-4,000 KB/s. I've tried to diagnose what could be causing this, but with not much luck so far.

- It occurs on pretty much all backup clients.
- while the job runs if I manually generate load on the backup client disk I can see an massive increase in load (i.e. Networker is not getting any where near the throughput on the disk). So the disks are ok.
- If I create network traffic between the networker server and the networker client I can max out the 1Gb link. So I think the network is ok.
- If I run many jobs then I can max out the Virtual tape drive (80MB/s). So I think the CDL / SAN connectivity is ok.

Does anyone have any ideas about where I can go from here?

With CDL you should run 7.3.2 version even I do not believe that is your problem as I had 7.2.2 with CDL and everything was fine.

Can you tell me how did you test network connectivity?

I ran performance monitor on the network link, and then firstly copied file data to to the networker server using windows shares (didn't max out the link, but consumed a lot more than the backup was taking), and then used a util called netperf to generate traffic between the client and the server.

Sorry - I should also add that the majority of these clients have their data on an EMC DMX SAN. Would this be adding any latency?

Try to do test using ftp and see what you get for both push and get operations. Or for testing purposes create file device on server and see if you get same sort of performance (to see if tape drives are involved or not).
