TFTP Problems (most likely ignorance on my end)

I'm embarassed to ask this question, but I'm having problems with using the TFTP configuration when trying to update the firmare on my 3048 powerconnect switch

Ok, so I installed the following product on my server:

"SolerWind.net TFTP Server"

I made a folder on the C:\ drive (named "boot"), so I have the following: C:\boot\

I placed the firmare file in there, so now I have this:  C:\boot\RDUx_612.fir

From Within whe Web Inteface management panel of the 3048 switch, I attempt to upgrade the firware by setting the following:

Next Boot from:    Net Net
TFTP Server IP Address: (the tftp server's IP here)  
TFTP Path/Filename: /boot/RDUx_612.fir

I press "apply", then I go to "reset" and reset the switch, and most of the time the switch appears to reload only half way. I press f5 to refress the screen (after about 5 minutes), and it all looks to be normal. I check the firmware version, and it still shows the old one.

Am I not using the TFTP Path/Filename correctly? Please Help.

When the program is run for the first time, the SolarWinds TFTP server creates a folder on the root of C: called TFTP-Root. By default, this is the root of the TFTP server. You can change the root to any folder you wish using the File/Configure menu.

Also, the default security settings are not configured for transmit and receive on the TFTP server. You should use the security tab in the Configure menu to configure it for transmit and receive.

If you change the root of the server to c:\boot, then you would simply need to change the TFTP Path/Filename configured on the switch. This is a path from the root of the TFTP server, not the root of the filesystem. If the file is located in the root folder, in this case c:\boot, you would simply need to specify the filename: RDUx_612.fir.

If you continue to have problems, I would suggest connecting to the console port on the switch to see the output during boot. The TFTP server will log connections on the main window of the program. If there is no connection logged, the switch is not contacting the server. In this case, you would need to verify connectivity between the switch management IP and the TFTP server.

Ok Greg, that worked. However, this is what I had to do:

At first, I was connecting to the switch via the same machine used as the TFTP Server. Not sure if that was causing some of the problems, but I used a different machine to connect to the switch this time.

That didn't work at first either, however I solved the problem by adding a step to the instructions. The instructions say to do the following when using the web interface:

1) Go to "System Manager/Firmware Upgrade"

2) Choose "Net & Save" (no mention of the TFTP server in the steps, but I entered the correct information in the fields)

3) Reset the Switch.

THIS DOES NOT WORK VIA THE WEB INTERFACE

However, by adding a step between steps 2 & 3 (we'll call it 2.5), it works.

The missing step is:

2.5) Go to "Save Configuration" and "Save Configuration to NVRAM"

By adding this, I was able to visually see the transfer happen in the SolarWind log window, and the Firmware update was successful.

My Question Now Is:

Now I have these permanent values in the Firmware Upgrade Page:

Next Boot from:   Last Saved
TFTP Server IP Address:   (My TFTP Server IP Address)  
TFTP Path/Filename:   RDUx_612.fir

The TFTP values are normally blank, but by adding step 2.5 the values I entered became permanent... Is that going to cause a problem in the event of a... let's say power glitch where the switched may reboot?

I think I answered my own question.... I shut down the TFTP server and then restarted the switch. It restarted OK, but the values are still pointing to the TFTP server and firmware filename... Oh well, as long as everything works, I'm happy.

Correct, the TFTP configuration settings will remain the same unless you manually change them. The Boot From: Last Saved simply means that it will boot to the firmware saved in the flash.

The added step you mention (step 2.5) is necessary because when clicking the Apply Changes button, you are simply applying changes to the running configuration (RAM). The changes made for the firmware upgrade must be saved to the startup configuration (NVRAM) to survive a reboot of the switch.
