Which computers connect to which port on 2724

Question

Our office cabling is a mess, and I'd like to know if my PowerConnect 2724 switches can help me sort out which computer is connected to which port. I understand these switches do not support SNMP, and the RMON stats don't show the MAC addresses on the ports.   The manual states 'The MAC addresses are stored in the Bridging Table.' Is there a way I can access this table, somehow?   Thanks, Mark

I would like to know if I can store a description or location for each port. I'm interested in a 2724 as well and would love to be able to log into the web management and click on a port and it tell me where it is per a field I labeled

In the web management supplied with the 2724 you cannot store names or other info with the ports. It would be nice if Dell could add it one day.   Also, it seems to me that a switch should be able to know the MAC-address of the device that is connected to a port, and it would be very helpfull and valuable if this info would be displayed in the web management module. Again, lets hope Dell will add this one day.   In the meantime I have sorted out my cable mess: I mirrored one port to another, and sniffed the other port with a packet sniffer (ethereal.com, great sniffer), and was able to discover most of the computers on my network. Dell does have it - in the web management it's under Switch - Address tables - Dynamic addresses. It lists all the mac addresses and what port it knows them on. Also, has a query function if you so desire.

Cliff, I presume you have your 2724 switch configured as DHCP server? My DHCP is not run on the switch, and I cannot find the Address Tables you mention. Thanks,Mark
