enable dimension 4500 for phone use

I have a dimension4500s with avoice/data/fax modem and classic phone tools installed. I have tried to use it as a phone via the microphone/speakers and it is awful.  do I need a headset or just a better mic.  My old compaq from 1995 works as a phone with just its speakers and a built-in mic---I want to retire it and get it out of the way....and I really like just a click of the mouse and hands free, no headphones either I can do my business.   How to reproduce that with my dell?  Thanks for your help.

I personally haven't found any computer "telephone" that really works well.  A headset would be better but in reality a PC is a poor voice telephone.  I have an old Compaq Presario and it doesn't work any better (works as bad) than any other PC.

Have you tried a regular "speaker phone" (but I've seen a lot of those - even high dollar models that had poor voice quality).
