UNSOLVED
Error 678
I have a Dimension E310. The Modem is a Conexant D850 56K v.9x DFVc. I also have Windows XP.
This computer is brand new and cannot connect to the internet. I have been on the phone with Dell for about 10 hours, after which they told me the modem is fine and they could not help me. I have uninstalled it, made sure it is plugged all the way in, turned off firewalls, plus more. I have also tried to use a different internet service (3 different ones). I have also plugged in the old computer that barely runs and it connects fine.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Typical fixes for this as reported by www.chicagotech.net
Error 678: There was not answer.
Resolution:
1) you are dialing the wrong number.
2) make sure you have good connection.
3) If using VPN, make sure the port 1723 and IP Protocol 47 (GRE) are opened.
I would start by connecting a regular phone (if you have one, not cordless) to the jack you are connected to and see if you have dial tone. If you do not have dial tone, call your phone company. If you have dial tone, see if you can turn the volume up on your modem and dial and see what you hear, that is always a good indicator of what's happening, example, if you get an operator response you may not hear it if the modem volume is turned down. If you have dial tone but the modem still returns this code, try following the steps in the KB listed below.
