Ethernet Card?

I have a Dell Dimension 4700 PC.  Having trouble setting up a network router via ethernet cable connection but I get an error that my network adaptor is not being recognized.  How do I know if this computer has an ethernet card?  Or what else could be my problem.  Normally we hook up to the cable modem via a USB connection and that works fine.  Thanks for any help you can offer.

The 4700 should have an integrated network adapter.  To see if it is properly installed, open Device Manager and click the + sign next to Network Adapters.

If you right click on the listing for the ethernet adapter in Device Manager and select Properties, what does it say?

It's showing up on the device manager (but has a red X over it) when we have the USB hooked up.  I'm assuming the red X means it's not in use.  Is there something that we need to do to activate it.  Nothing we plug in to it works.

A quick step to try is to RIGHT click and Uninstall the network adapter that has the red X, then close all applications and restart the computer to get the process to detect it again (found new hardware)
