Ethernet connection problem

Hi. I have a Dell Latitude, about 3 years old, running Windows 10.

I think for the first time ever with this laptop, I tried connecting an ethernet cable to the RJ45 port as the wi-fi I'm using is not too good. I've tried two cables , one of which I know definitely works.

But nothing happens, no connection is made. Is there something I should be doing to get the connection to work?

Thks for assistance, Steve

Yes I try that and nothing happens. Two different routers in office, cannot connect to either. If I go to network and internet settings and click on ethernet, it says not connected. If I do the troubleshooter, it tells me to plug in an ethernet cable when one is already connected.
