"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close".

Problem Description: Evertime I close a window in Internet Explorer, I get an error message, "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close". The popup asks to send an error report which I do. Then when I close the popup, internet explorer shuts down. Before I send the error report, I view details which brings up another popup with the following info explaining reporting policy,
Error Signature Appname: iexplore.exe
Appver: 6.0.2800.1106
Modname: unknown
Modver: 0.0.0.0.
Offset: 039cbfe1

I will view technical information that starts with,
exception information
Code 0xc0000005
flags 0x00000000
record 0x0000000000000000
address 0x00000000039cbfel

details will then continue on into a large list of "Modules, Threads and Memory ranges".

Lastly, The file sent with the error report,
C:Docum~1\dbaisden\Locals~1\temp\weree.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

I recognize the file "~" it has just appeared a few times on my desktop. It is not associated with any specific program, icon looks like the windows icon that shows when it doesn't know what to open as. I have deleted it many times. continues to come back.
Why does this close Internet Explorer evertime I close a window?
Thanx,
Dbaisden

Go over to the Virus Information and Removal forum and read a few messages over there, many of which will give you links to spyware removal programs.  Download, install, update, and run Spybot and Ad-Aware and let these programs remove all of the garbage that they find.  If those two don't resolve the problem, continue with the instructions for downloading and running HijackThis, then post the log generated by that program in one of the suggested forums.

Apologize in advance for my lack of computer knowledge. I don't see why downloading a program will stop my IE from shutting down. Did I pick something up??? There are 4 users on this dell. Did someone possibly pick something up or delete a program it needs to run? It didn't do it all the time until recently, last couple of weeks, it progressivley got worse so it shuts down every time I close a web page or try to go to a web page from an e-mail link.

Nearly 80% of the errors being reported these days in Internet Explorer is due to garbage that people acquire from surfing the internet.  Some of it is installed simply by visiting an unscrupulous web page.  Most of is installed by answering Yes to a question and then not reading the fine print.  This spyware, adware, malware, or parasites, as it is all called, interferes with all kinds of functions on your computer.  This may or may not be the problem you having, but because so many problems are caused by this junk, the first order of business is to make sure that you have gotten rid of any that you may have.  Simply downloading the programs to combat spyware will not solve the problem.  You have to install them, update them so that they have the most current defintions, run them, and then tell them to remove all of the garbage.

Since you have 4 users, any of them could have installed the crud and even you could have inadvertantly installed it.  There is so much of it going around these days, that I would not be surprised if you have a lot of it.

Please go to the Virus Information and Removal forum.  There are thousands of messages there concerning spyware.  Look for reply by ChrisRLG.  He has links to download antispyware progams and also offers advice on downloading and running HijackThis.  First get Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware.  These two programs should be run weekly with updated spyware definitions.  If that doesn't solve the problem, continue with the insructions for HijackThis and post the log that it creates in the appropriate forum.

    1. Go to Control Panel, click Internet Options.

    2. Click the Advance tab.

    3. Uncheck Enable third-party browser extension.

    4. Click Apply, then click OK.

    5. Reboot system.

*** try it! usually it works ***

That worked because it prevented a possibly malicious browser extension from loading. See "volcano11"'s earlier posts for advice, or click on the second link listed below to access ChrisRLG's post.

All, went to symantec's website and ran a couple of scans for firewall protection and virus/trojan checks, all good. (I am running the latest version of Norton anti-virus) Downloaded and installed spybot and ad-ware as recommended by chrisrlg. Ad-Ware found 258 files, removed them all. System is working very efficiently now. will check for updates and run programs regularly.

Thanx all for the help, greatly appreciated.

If I run into problems later on down the highway will definately return for help.

    Thanx again,

    Dave.
