Network Connection

I have replaced older Compaq Presario with new Dell Dimension 5000 with MS-Windows-XP (Version 5.1.2600).  I operate an ADSL Router (Zyxel) and have defined a Home-Network with total 4 pcs.  Al of them (including the replaced compaq) work(ed) perfectly with internet as well as within the network and can communicate perfectly with each other.

But the new DELL doesn't !!! (what a shame)

I have installed the network using the installation guide of xp.  Everything worked well.  When opening the network-icon in explorer, the network-name appears normally.  But when clicking the netorkname (expecting the network-pcs to appear), an error message appears:  "not allowed to communicate with this network resource;  Contact administrator ...." (or similar;  sorry, this is translating from German).

Now I have run the Network Diagnosis from xp and here is the result:

"Netzwerkadapter [00000001] Broadcom 440x10/100 Integrated Controller  -  Fehlgeschlagen" (failed)

........

"IPAdress = 192.168.1.37 (Fehlgeschlagen)" (failed)

......

(all other shows ok.)

I have of course switched off all virus protection,  pop-up blockers, etc.  Also I have ascertained Automatic IP-Adress, etc.

Can Someone help?

Thank you

    I'm not sure why you are getting the messages in the diagnostic that the network adapter failed.  If indeed it did fail the diagnostics (it gets a proper IP address, yet is says it failed - I don't understand that), then you could troubleshoot further by reinstalling the network card drivers and/or temporarily installing a PCI network adapter.  Report back what you find.

    Norton Internet Security should work fine with your computer.  Tech Support is just too lazy to figure out why you need to do.   You just need to configure the Norton firewall properly so that it willl allow local network traffic.  Read the manual (it should be on the CD that came with your computer).

    Thanks for responding, Steve

    Upon recommendation of Dell Tech. Support, I have now completely uninstalled Norton Internet Securities 2004, rather than just disactivating it.  Now the problem is completely gone and the Home Network works perfectly as it did earlier days with my old Compaq.

    The Dell Tech. Supporter tells me, this problem is known  to them and he does not know how to resolve it other than just not using Norton !! (so I wonder why they sell this product on their own pcs?)

    I will enquire with Norton and let you know.  Or do you have any Idea?
