I have home network with desktop(win7) and laptop(winxp). HP Deskjet 5550 printer is connected to desktop. After adding printer, installing printer software and locating network printer. I am able to print sample/test page on laptop. Only to come back hours later and find I cannot print with laptop. (Offline) The desktop finds printer with no problem. With laptop I have uninstalled printer and reinstalled and come up with same result.
Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)
Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.
Go to each USB Root Hub and right click on it, left click properties, left click power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.
Restart your computer.

It seems I need to install the x86 XP drivers. Not sure where I need to look. HP says I don't need drivers, all drivers are already installed on Win 7.
Turns out I did not need the XP Software and drivers. When I set up the shared computer(Win XP) to access network printer. I had done nothing with Port settings. So, created NEW local port in Printer Properties \\ Computer name\ Printer name from Host computer. Works fine now! One of those " Idiosyncrasies" in computers. Thanks for all your help with this network issue!!!!!! MTAXI
