No Dial Tone

Dimension 3000 - XP. When trying to connect to Earthlink, getting no dial tone. Two different laptops can connect to Earthlink on the phone line. Took computer to another home and connected to Earthlink without problems. Have been through all the suggestions from Earthlink & Microsoft. Nothing (printers, etc.) hooked up to computer. Anyone have a clue about this?

A couple of thoughts. Are you using the exact same telco jack for all the computers? If not, the wall jack for the one that doesn't connect could be bad. Also, are you using the same RJ-11 telco interconnect cable for all tests? If not, maybe the cable is bad?

You have to use everything the same, to make a true comparison.

ADDED: One other thought. connect a standard voice telephone to the wall jack that does not have dial tone and see if you get it with the voice phone. That will help to isolate the problem.

Yes to the above - even get the Earthlink "handshake" noise when using a phone. Only thing different was the mouse - will try the laptop mouse.
    Gremlins, maybe?

The mouse should not make a difference.

Another thought, are you connecting the telco RJ-11 cable to the "line" on the modem? - not the auxillary telephone connection.

Thanks for the input - decided to take care of the problem by getting Hi-Speed - bypass the modem.
    Appreciate the assistance.
