I have two Dell notebooks which came with 1182(b) cards and a router. I want to upgrade to 1182(g) + WAP. Suggestions for cards/router for me to get? I am a real novice in this area, so ease of installation is important to me. Finally, I may need to add a bridge or repeater(?) because of thick walls in an old house. I am hoping that 1182(g) will give me coverage, but I would like suggestions on this as well. Thanks!
Just checking, but you want to upgrade from 802.11b to 802.11g for faster data transfer between your PC's and not for faster internet access, right? Is WAP not available for your 802.11b equipment?
Excellent, you've identified three advantages to the upgrade from which you'll benefit.
If you find a need to extend coverage, some routers also have the option of using an external antenna that will boost and/or focus the signal. I'm not familiar with your layout, but you may be better off with a repeater or with an external antenna on the router. I just wanted to toss that idea in for your consideration.
Sorry I can't offer any advice on ease of installation. There are others here on the board with a broader experience in this than I. All I've used is Lucent/Orinoco, so I've nothing to compare against it. I will say updating the Orinoco software seems a bit more challenging than should be necessary.
