reduce boot time in dell R620

Hello,

for reducing boot time in R620 I  have read in another post this solution:

"You can turn off the power capping option, which holds the cpu at the lowest frequency during post. You would use openmanage power center to do this. http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/dell-openmanage-power-center/pd

Turning off in system characterization in the bios misc settings will also help"

What is the openmanage power center? Is it a free application for managing the power of dell servers?

Are there any other actions that could be taken?

Thanks and BR/

    Cpalomo,

OpenManage Power Center is a tool that you can use to monitor and manage power settings and readings of up to 2000 servers. It is free, but will require you to fill out a form to download. You can find the form here - https://marketing.dell.com/open-manage-power-center?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd

One thing you can look at is disabling the Extended Memory Test adds some minimal additional test coverage, but can extend boot times significantly with large memory configurations (approximately one second/GB of memory). Access the BIOS (F2)  - Memory Settings - then Disable System Memory Testing.

That would be the only thing I would suggest as other things can cause system instability. If you are not running any PCI cards for example you could disable the  PCI Slot Displacement in Integrated Devices, but doing so makes the slots unreadable to everything, including the OS.

Let me know if this helps answer your questions.

    Hello,

    thanks for your reply.

I have checked the Extended Memory Test and I had it already disabled.

Regarding the pci cards, I have three pci slots in the integrated devices but I guess I can't disable it as my network interfaces are pci devices?

When the server is booting there is a message saying "collecting system inventory". Could it be disabled this setting or is it necessary?

    Thanks,

    Cristina.

Sorry about that. You will hit F2 on boot to access the System Services.. From there you will select iDrac Settings from the menu and then Lifecycle Controller. After that then Disable the Collect System Inventory on Restart.

    Hello,

    thanks for your reply.

Regarding turning off the power capping option I read that it is needed an additional license, is this correct?:

With an additional license for Dell Server Power Capping and group power budgeting, you can:

    - Mitigate risk by reducing power consumption per a pre-defined policy or policies

    - Maximize the uptime of business critical applications via a reduction in non-critical consumption first

    - Manage power consumption without impacting performance

    Thanks and BR/

    Hello Chris H,

regarding the disabling of the power capping, do you recommend this for reducing boot time? or is it better for the dell post to do it at a low frequency?

REgarding the power management center, is this application connecting to the ilom of the server or to the O&M ip?

    Thanks and BR/

This thread was going the right direction.

    What happened?

Looking for the same info but in the context of a t610.
