I got one of these from a friend. Its relatively new and I was wondering how do I use the recovery partition to do a full clean (I don't want to manually reinstall the OS). I can't seem to find it in the boot menu.

But when I am in the computer there is a partition labeled as recovery that is 2.99 GB.......

There isn't a recovery partition on this machine, it lists a utility partition during post but this is installed during the os load via the system build and update cd. The utility partition is only about 32mb in size and contains diags tools.
