I have a fan issue with my Precision M6300(Intel Core2 Extreme X9000 2.8GHz, 8GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, NVidia Quadro FX 1600M, Win 10 Home 21H1, A15 BIOS).
The fans sometimes run continuously regardless of OS(Win 7 Clean Inst., Win10 #1 on top of Win 7, Win 10 #2 on top of #1, and Win 10 #3 Clean Inst.), Temperature, or Activity(Running Updates, Web Browsing, Streaming, Playing Audio CD’s, Idling). Sometimes they even start at high speed while making changes in the BIOS. The only way to make them stop and resume normal operation is restarting.
I have tried reinstalling the BIOS, resetting the BIOS to Defaults, reverting the BIOS to A14, and resetting the NVRAM. None helped. I have run all tests with Dell Support Assist, everything passed. I ran the Pre-Boot Diagnostics, no issues were found.
When running normally (Green Mode) and idling with only Open Hardware Monitor running: the fans are stopped, the CPU Load Avg. is ~15%, the CPU Temp Avg. is ~115F, and the GPU Temp Avg. is ~135F. When the pc is pushed, the fans kick in gradually. When activity ceases, the fans slow and then stop.
Yellow Mode is when the fans run slowly, the CPU Load Avg. is ~35%, the CPU Temp. Avg . is ~95F, and the GPU Temp. Avg. is ~130F. The pc is a little slow and jittery, but usable. Restarting will bring back Green Mode and this may last all day, or Yellow Mode could resume, or Orange Mode or Red Mode could ensue.
Orange Mode is when the fans run at high speed. The CPU Load Avg. is ~15%, the CPU Temp. Avg. is ~80F, and the GPU Temp. Avg. is ~130F. The pc is as usable as in Green Mode, but the fans will never stop. Restarting usually brings back Green Mode for the rest of the day and it sometimes lasts for many days.
Red Mode is when the fans run at high speed and the pc is unusable. The CPU Load Avg. is ~90% with explorer.exe and dwm.exe taking up much more Load than usual, the CPU Temp. Avg. is ~100F, and the GPU Temp. Avg. is ~130F. Restarting usually brings back Green Mode for the rest of the day and it sometimes lasts for many days.
Any help that anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated!
Turn off the computer. Check the air vents on the computer for dust or debris. ... See the User Manual of your Dell computer. Use a can of compressed air to remove dust or debris from the air vents, dust filters (if any) and cooling fan fins.
I don't think the problem relates to this as it doesn't explain the intermittent nature of the issue. If this were the root cause, I think the fans would run all day every day, not run some days and not other days. I also think the fans would restart after restarting the pc.
Previous to Windows 10 you could just run the installer from Windows. Now you must create a bootable USB drive with the BIOS installer on it. Then boot from the USB stick and run the installer from the DOS prompt. You may need to search the web for instructions and the bootable DOS. I don't remember where I got it, but it worked.
