Menue - go to advanced fax - select - go to ring pattern - find the one you use and select.I hate to sound so dumb, but I am not sure where to start. Menue?, advanced fax? Help. I really need to get my fax working, so that I can receive faxes. I looked at the Dell 8400 owner's manual, but I am not finding much. I am not sure where my printer manual is.

Maybe I assumed too much. I have the Dell 962. It has a button labeled "menu". When you push it it goes through different options. I push it till it gets to "advanced fax". I then have another button labeled "select" I push. I then push "menu" again till I get to the "ring pattern" option. Push "select" again. Then right or left arrow key to find the pattern you want. Then push "select" again. It shows "saved".
Maybe the 960 is different - which makes all of this worthless to you. Sorry- I am making progress. I have the A960 and although I don't have the menue button, I was able to get to the ring pattern part. I selected my three ring pattern. I had my friend test my fax and it still isn't working to receive faxes correctly. I have to set the printer to pick up after 1,2 or three rings or my voice mail will pick up the phone. I need to have my voice mail available when I am out, but I also need to have incoming faxes available when I am out. If I set the printer to read "When fax tone is heard" I don't get a fax. My regular ring phone number will pick up faxes as well is the special ring line when I have my printer set to pick up after 1,2, or 3 rings. But then I don't have an answering machine. And then I have to answer in phone in 2.5 rings or the fax machine will go off in my client's ear. I can't afford to lose client's because of my inability to control my fax machine.Do I need to set anything in the computer to recognize the special ring pattern? Should I leave my printer on 5 rings, let the voice mail pickup and when a fax is coming will it switch to fax? I don't think my special ring pattern line has the voice mail attached it is only on the regular line.I am sure I just have one more button to push and I will be all ready to go. I just don't know which button.Thanks for your help. I am closer than I was.Porter5

Don't know if I can help anymore - but I have an answering machine. It is set to pick up on 4 rings. My fax is set to check on 2 rings. I had the squeel problem with my HP printer/fax picking up when I was on the phone, but haven't with the Dell. I have DSL and did have to put a filter on the phone line to the fax. Hope you can resolve problem!
