I am running Vista Home Premium and can print perfectly. When I try to add the scanner, I get a message, "Cannot find device." I have eliminated the firewall. Is anyone familiar with a fix?
for some reason, the installation software for the 1600n isn't setup correctly. This is both on the CD that I used a couple years ago for my XP notebook, and just last night, I downloaded 1600n drivers directly from dell for my XPS notebook (32 bit vista). First, install the printer software, but uncheck the "scan" software option.
complete the installation.
Then, do not use the normal setup program for the entire printer system, but drill down to the network scan and run the setup from there. I struggled with this for almost an hour before I tried and it finally worked. Too bad I didn't remember about this 2 years ago. I'm not sitting in front of my system, so I can't tell you the exact things to click.
Actually, I forgot that I downloaded the patch ... I was so relieved after I got the scanner to work that I forgot to install the patch.
I should consider updating the drivers on my older laptops running XP ... noticed that the network scan usually "loses" connection with the printer after the notebook goes to sleep ... and even after I exit network scan and re-start ... it often has problems scanning ... I often carry my laptop to room where the 1600n is to make it easier to repeat trying to scan.
