Iv'e looked on here*(maybe not hard enough) and I know that the older models were made by Lex. but who makes the new ones. I havent been able to find comparable models anywhere... so whats going on.... who makes these printers?
Correct, thats all Dell's doing, they dont want you to be able to go to Best Buy, Staples... etc... and buy ink for your Dell, they want the monopoly effect of being able to hold onto your loyalty(haha) and buying the ink directly from them, which is what you end up having to do. The drivers are also different for the fact that they want you to think Dell makes it, Dell just sells, and supports it....
I knew that Dell didnt make it, they just stamped thier name on it, I was just wondering if they found a new contractor to manufacture the new line of machines....
thats not correct. All of Dell's inkjets (810,924,944,964)and at least the 1710 laser are still made by lexmark. The Lexmark branded models even have a similar feel and look to them (735, 2350, 8350, E240). Of course the cartridges still are not interchangable.
I do believe that Kodak has manufactured a dye-sublimation photo printer for dell before though.
that is the only one, that is the dye sublimation printer i was talking about in my previous post. Just because they show one printer doesnt mean they are all made by kodak. Lexmark does not have dye sublimation technology so they went to another vendor.
Compare the Dell 810

to the Lexmark x2350

This particular model looks identical and uses the same basic cartridge technology (1 cartridge, 3 colors, composite black). The other models are similar looking to other Lexmarks as well. The drivers and software are based off of Lexmark's also, they look identical except anywhere that there is a Lexmark logo Dell changed it to include their own (not the only difference, just the most obvious).
I hear that XEROX makes these printers for Dell. I checked on Xerox products and they are much, much higher than what I paid. So I believe Lexmark is manufacturing Dell Printer.
