EXCEL 2002

I'M HAVING A BIT OF TROUBLE FOR THE LAST FEW DAYS WITH EXCEL
I CAN NO LONGER OPEN SHORT-CUT SPREADSHEETS THAT WERE ON MY DESKTOP
I CAN NO LONGER OPEN ANY SAVED SPREADSHEETS UNLESS I HAVE EXCEL OPEN
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS AS TO WHY THIS HAS OCCURED, AND ANY SOLUTIONS?
THANKS
PEGGIE

    1) Excel is part of Microsoft Office, and there is a forum called Software - Microsoft Office (see the right dropdown menu).  That's where this should be posted.

    2) Typing in all CAPS is considered SHOUTING, please use the shiftkey.

    3) Sounds like your Excel file types are not connected to Excel.  Right click on Start, left click on Explore.  Click on Tools, Folder Options, File Types.  .xls should say Excel next to it, if not change it.

Thank you rickmktg for your quick response.
I had no idea that typing in all caps was an issue, thank you for pointing that out.
I'll try your suggestions and if that is not the issue I will go to the forum you mentioned.

You can do a Detect and Repair operation in Excell. It will automatically re-register file associations.

BTW, you can fix it how the previous person mentioned, but somteimes think are not always 100% fixed such as advanced options. For instance, and xls is special. If you check its properties you have extra properties and metadata including author, summary, revisions...

You also have some special right click options on some files.

Would you please walk me through the Detect and Repair Operation in Excel. I've not heard of this before and have been trying to find it with no luck.

    Thanks, Peg

    HI,

I have Office 2003, but it is the same essentially. Office XP ~= Office 2003

    Anyway, here is the deal.

First open the program; your icon will differ a little with the 2002/XP version.

Click on Help and wait or click the down arrow to see all options and select "Detect and repair"

Next, check both boxes to repair all shortcuts and remove all settings you made. It will re-register all associations, redo all shortcuts, fix any broken macros, fix all templates, and remove the junk the registry accumulates for Excell. Essentially, it just purges all the settings you made since you installed it. You will get the Out of the Box experience.
