Word-Creating Columns

How do you create columns in Word that are not newspaper columns.  That is, I want to create multiple columns in which I can type text in one and then jump to another and type corresponding text, rather than the newspaper type column where the first column has to fill up before it will wrap to the second column.

    Denny,

Thanks very much for your prompt reply.  I'll give it a try and let you know if I have any further questions.

    jwringer,

One way to create the document you are trying to create is to creat a table with the number of columns you wish and one row. Go into Table|Autofit to set the size of the table you wish to use. You can then enter text into any of the column in the table. There may be a more elegant solution to this problem (and probably is) but this one will work until someone comes along with an alternative.

Parallel Columns was always a feature of WordPerfect, even in the DOS era, but there still is no way to do the same thing in Word. Nobody needs to do this, right? Making a table is the only practical way to do it in Word. It is a little awkward but you get used to it.

Thanks for your reply.  This was also a feature of Lotus Word Pro, now owned, I believe, by IBM. Word Pro had a very simple and easy to use feature.  I have tried Word Perfect and hate it with a passion.  I will get used to the tables feature of Word; it is so superior to WP, from my point of view.

Ironic. I swore by WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS and have been mostly swearing at Word ever since I had to make the transition. I still cannot figure out why Word and Office lack the functionality among their components that was so simple with WP 5.1 and WP Office. Oh well. Not that WP for Windows is much of a picnic, either.

    Joe,

I understand what you are saying.  I went from Wordstar 2000 (a dos program) to Lotus Word and never wanted to change from Lotus; then swore and cussed through learning Word, and now it has become second nature.  I guess the lesson is that we each grow accustomed to what works best for us and changing is a pain.  Thanks again for your reply.
