4300 Error Message on Start-Up
I have a 4300 that I purchased from Dell in 2001. I live in a new neighborhood and we lose power a lot, due to all the construction. It has wreaked havoc on my PC, but things became relatively painless when I upgraded to XP Home Edition a couple of months ago. Well, we lost power again the other day and now I get this message on start-up:
Dell's Disk monitoring system has detected that drive 0 on the primary EIDE controller is operating outside of normal specifications. It is advisable to immediatly back up your data and replace your hard drive by calling your support desk.
Press F1 to continue or F2 for setup.
I tried getting through this a few different ways, and from what I can find from this forum is that my HD has pretty much died. Of course I didn't back-up anything, so I am assuming I lost everything? Does anyone out there know how to get me out of this nightmare? If my HD is done, can I get some suggestions of what to buy and where? Is it possible to recover any data?
Thanks very much.
Patrick

emspat.
That is a S.M.A.R.T drive error message, saying that the HD has failed or is failing

If the HD does not run, then you're lost the data, if it's still working, then it should be possible If the computer is under Dell's warranty, then contact their Tech, Support about a replacement, if not, you could use just about any standard IDE/ATA hard drive, remember to check for specials.
