CD-RW problem
I am operating with Windows XP Home (SP2) on a Dimension XPS T600. While I was in my computer cleaning it I took out the old DVD Rom and installed a new DVD burner in its place. After getting everything back on line I find that I no longer can burn a CD on the CD burner which is original equipment and worked ok before. It is on the same IDE bus as the DVD burner. I made sure the CD device was configured to record and is set up properly in the register with a "2" as a CD-RW device. I also noticed that I no longer get the Prompt screen to ask me what I want to do when I insert a disk in the CD device. Windows is set up to give me the prompt screen, but I don't know if this is connected to the burning problem or not. I can see what is on the disk by going to MY Computer and clicking on the CD drive. I've gone through all the troubleshooting I know, and have concluded that I must have dislodged some connection when I did the upgrade. I also found that when I set the DVD up to record in the Device Manager, this clears the record function on the CD unit. It appears that I can only have one of these devices set up to record at a time. I just figured that this is the way Windows XP works, even though it seems to me that both units are recording devices, so they both should be able to work without having to monkey around with the Windows configuration. You can see I'm a little confused and would welcome any suggestions on what to do next.
- Yes, you helped me with the dip switdh setting, BIOS and drive configuration when I installed the new DVD burner. I now understand that my system will not operate with two burners, one CD and one DVD. So I took the CD burner out and put the old DVD ROM back in it's place. So now I have a new DVD burner in Drive E: and the DVD ROM in drive D: The DVD burner has a "2" in the register to allow it to record and the ROM has a "3" so everything should be aligned correctly. The Device Manager indicates both devices are functioning correctly. I have set up Windows to prompt me when I insert a disk in either drive. For some reason that does not happen. I get a disk symbol and then an hour glass but no prompt. When I try to copy files with the DVD burner, it does not see the blank CD I have inserted even though it is a fresh one right out of the package. I understand the DVD burner will write to a CD, so I don't know why it is not working. I purchased the DVD burner after consulting on the forum, so I have every reason to expect it to work on my system when I configure it correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
- I may have misinterpreted your last question. The end of the IDE cable is also connected to the DVD ROM. If this makes any difference, I can just eliminate the DVD ROM from the system and hook the end of the IDE Bus to the new burner (along with the A/V cable).
- Ok, the DVD burner typically does better at the end of the cable (master position in a cable select configuration). Make sure you boot to the BIOS to make sure the drives are properly recognized after you swap them. Next, reboot your system and verify both drives are running in DMA mode (the FAQ contains instructions for checking DMA).
- Ok, I have verified that both drives are recognized correctly and are running in DMA mode. I tried loading a DVD with a movie to see if either drive would prompt for action as I had requested in the drive properties. Didn't happen; yet, when I clicked on the drive from My Computer, the audio and video files from the movie would list. I tried uninstalling the drivers for both drives and rebooting too. Still not right.
- If you can read the disc contents, then the drive is working correctly. Now your problem is that your DVD will not autoplay when you insert a disc. To fic this, open My Computer, right click the drive and selet Properties. Go to the autoplay tab, and under media type, select DVD movie and then the program you want to use, Apply, OK.
- I have tried to select a video player as you suggest and still nothing happens. Same result as when I ask to be prompted for an action to take when a disc is inserted. The DVD burner will not recognize a blank CD-R or a blank DVD-R. So I have a new burner that wont burn and two devices that wont playback in auto. Everything seems to be hooked up right. Not sure what can be done now.

Try this. Insert the disc, then open your DVD program and see if the movie starts.
You might want to try running the autoplay repair wizard. That often fixes these sorts of things.
Another little utility I like to use to see if a DVD burner is able to correctly read a blank is DVD identifier. Download and install that and see if it can read your blank DVDs.

Your screen name is familiar. Did I help you with something else?
Just to check one thing right off the bat, are you sure the drive jumper was set to cable select? It's also a good practice to boot to the BIOS and check the drive configuration when installing a new device. Did you check that?
