Disk Driver/Contoller Card is not recognized

Help,
I recently tried to upgrade my AntiVirus software from Norton 2003 to 2004 as stated below, and a compatibility problem stopped part of the upgrade when it came to 'LiveUpdate'.

Here's some system background, several months ago my computer suffered a major crash. I had $450 to spend, and was not able to find any available computers in that price range. I have been around this unit since 1998 and comfortable as a user, so I took on the task to rebuild my computer using both forums and friends. Isn't ebay wonderful. The system is back up and running and is listed below: (oem before / after modifications)
1998 - Dell XPS R series running with Windows 98SE operating system and other assorted software
*Intel PII-400MHz/PowerLeap Celeron PIII-1.4GHz
*Maxtor 9.2GB-5200rpm/Maxtor 160GB-7200rpm with Maxtor 100-133 ATA controller (I was instructed to partition the drive into thirds so each drive would be less than 60GB)
*Toshiba CD/DVD ROM SD-M1202/Toshiba CD/DVD ROM SD-M1612
*Cinemaster C WDM DVD Driver
*(Add) Sony CRX175A1 CD-RW Drive
*TurtleBeach Montego A3 sound/Creative SB Audigy LS sound
*NEC Floppydrive/Panasonic Floppydrive
*STB Invidia 128 Velocity ZX video card
*US Robotics 56KVoice Dialup-modem/Linksys LNE100TX DSL modem
*Corded MS Wheel Mouse/Corded MS optical wheel mouse
*Dell 19-inch D1226H monitor
*Dell natural keybd/MS natural Internet keybd
Add regular accessories: printer, scanner, speakers & headphones, joystick.

A problem as stated above occurred just recently, one that I cannot seem to fix. After visiting both Microsoft and Symantec FAQ and solution sites, I found that under 'My Computer' listed on the Performance tab this statement:Compatibility-mode paging reduces overall system performance; and Drive C, Drive D, & Drive E are using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.
In checking at a Microsoft KnowledgeBase site refers to this occurring when Windows doesn't recognize a driver in either Config.sys or Autoexec.bat files. MS further suggests contacting the Harddrive manufacturer about any suggested fixes. I have done that, but there hasn't been any fixes that have worked.

The computer seems to operate okay, short of not being able to have the LiveUpdater portion of the virus protection program do any updating online.  I have been able to manually update the 2003 program which is currently still in force, but soon to end.  I really need to install the 2004 program to be able to get the free updates and coverage.

I recently tried upgrading from Norton systemworks 2003 to 2004 and got an error message LU1814. I then went to Norton for information, only to try a fix that didn't fix anything. In fact, one of the software settings that they suggested eliminated my receiving email. I restored to default settings and everything returned including LU1814 when I tried to install version 2004. I don't know how to fix this. I went to Microsoft Knowledge Base and found several references, but could find any fix that worked. I haven't been able to find a way into the Maxtor harddrive site beyond the FAQs.
When I visited the Symantec site and tried fixing the problem using the LU1814 fix, I lost my email support after going through Fix Step #3. I then got a call to my ISP and we rechecked all of the boxes, etc to reset things and get email back. Afterwards I tried LiveUpdate once again and if failed again. I then checked the status at My Computer Performance tab and the compatibility issue was still there.
I went to the MS Knowledge Base and found a suggested fix with article #151911, and I followed the 'resolution', at regedit. This is what I found:
Name/Data
(icon with ab inside it) Default/(value not set)
(icon with 1s & 0s) Start/00
(icon with ab) Static VxD/"*IOS"
That is all that was there, so I did not delete anything.

My Question is, can I try to re-load the controller driver from Maxtor or the MaxBlast 3 software cd without harming any stored data on the harddrive? I have asked the question at both MS and Maxtor, but have not heard back from either at this point.

Any ideas would be welcome & Thanks for any of your time and consideration!
