after many problems with my computer a dell technician advised me to reinstall windows.  so i did, and when it came on for the first time i heard this awful beeping noise that wouldnt stop.  called techs again and had to check the backof the tower to see what letters were lit.  well one time ab another time I turned it on it was bd, ad, it just kept changing whenever I turned it on.  so i got frustrated. no one could help so i shut it off for a few days and now when i turn it on everything boots ok but i have no cd or dvd drive.  there is power to both of them but they arent listed under my computer.  i do not have internet access on it either because i need to put the cd in!  please help. very frustrated!!!!

Look in the Device Manager .........

Start | Control Panel | System in classic view | Hardware tab | Device Manager

Click on the (+) next to DVD/CD-ROM drives.  Right-click the drive and select Properties.
Is there an Error Code present?

Because you reinstalled Windows XP, this Miccosoft Article may apply.

Additionally, enter the set-up (BIOS) and check if the drive is
there and enabled.  Also, please tell us what computer model you
    have.

ok i'm not very smart with computers.  I did everything it said and then got to the part to reinstall and now it says they might not be compatible?  What?  They came with the computer, with Windows XP.   I'm going to throw the system out the window.  Can't someone just help me and tell me what to do?

The drive is compatible, the statement in the Microsoft Article is from
the early days of Windows XP.  Have you checked the Set-up (BIOS)?
