Outlook Express

A few days ago, my Outlook Express started hesitating when I try to open up a message. The hourglass will come on and it says, not responding at the top, then it will finally let me open a message. it does this with every message. What has happened to it and how do Iget it to work right again.

Windows up to date on all critical patches (including OE)? Antivirus and firewall software up to date, in place, and running at all times?

Yes, I have all the patches for Outlook Express and my virus protection and firewall is running all the time.  Is this the problem?

I have McAfee anti virus running all the time with no Outlook Express problems. And I as I recall Microsoft SP2 has Firewall built in. And that 's adjustable. Still no problems. Maybe its some of the START UP programs that are loading. Those are all the program icons next to the time clock. I deleted most of them.

I just have the IM logo and the clock and WeatherBug running in the start up, but they've been there all the time.  Nothing new on here, but it still is weird the way it is doing and has never done it before.  Maybe someone else will have an idea, but thanks for your help.

I went to support.microsoft.com  "Opening a message may take an unusually long time" Cause-This behavior can occur if you have turned on background compaction or stored newsgroup messages in Outlook Express

To resolve this behavior, turn off background compaction  Resolution- 1. In Outlook Express, on the TOOLS menu click OPTIONS   2. Click the Maintenance tab, click to clear the COMPACT MESSAGES IN THE BACKGROUND check box, and then click OK.  3. Quit and then restart Outlook Express     I have found the microsoft support website very helpfull in the past. The code printed by Microsoft for this problem is 257824 OL2000. I guess my input re startup items near the clock was wrong. Anyway if you click on the arrows to the left of the TIME startup items should show up.

You might want to contact your service provider to see if they are having any issues.

Thanks, I think you might have hit on my problem.  I had subscribed to a newsgroup and even though I had not gotten any messages, when I deleted the newsgroup, OE seems to be running faster.  So may have been my problem.  I know it was giving me fits.  So thanks so much.
