    FrankMcGrogan.

    Latitude 3000 or Dimension 3000?

Try running Dell diagnostics extended test on the hard drive. Boot the system, press F12 to run the Dell diagnostics.

Check the BIOS to see if the HD is recognized there, but if sounds like the drive has failed.   As you cannot use the dell Diagnostics, go to the hard drive manufacturer's website and download their hard drive diagnostics to a bootable floppy.

If the computer is under warranty, contact Dell about a replacement.

Same thing happened to me and Dell installed a new HD.  Computer was only a few months old.  When you contact them they will have you open the box to check cable connections, so save time and do that before you phone them. Also check the BIOS and if it reports no HDD fitted or recognised that's a sure sign that it's failed.  I wonder if there's a problem with the 3000 HDD in general, or maybe they just got a bad batch from the supplier.

Thank you both for your swift and helpful advice.  I lost patience with it last night and opened the case up. Guess what!  The connector WAS LOOSE. Reconnected it and now no problems - Frank
