ControlCenter v6 Upgrade

Question

This is my first time upgrading on my own. I'm looking to upgrade v5.2 of CC to v6

I've been unable to find specific order of install/upgrade for the following:

Solutions Enabler v6.4.2
Symmetrix Mgmt Console v6.0.2
ControlCenter v6.0

We have
- z/OS-attached Symmetrix DMX1000
- Windows 2000 Svr ControlCenter v5.2 Server

It is my understanding that since my ControlCenter server does NOT directly connect to any Symmetrix array I need to install the Solutions Enabler on z/OS as our SYMAPI Server. A single LPAR is all that is required? Can I have different versions on different LPARs? Do I need SE on ECC server as well?

Is this the Correct/Best order to install?
Upgrade SE first
then install SMC on ECC server
then upgrade ControlCenter & Agents

The order you listed should work fine - SMC is really just launched from ECC so I do not believe the order of installation will make any difference.

Unfortunately I can not help with the mainframe components other than to say I'm pretty sure you'll need SE and a Symmetrix agent running on the ECC server to talk with the MVS agent if you do not have any other Symmetrix agents in your environment.

I've emailed EMC about an upcoming ECC 6 upgrade / install. I used the address svc@emc.com (solution validation center), but I got no response whatsoever. It's been 2 weeks now and time is running out for me. Does anyone know where to find a sort of best practices guide for ECC6 ?

We'd like to reuse our hardware if possible and get advice on how to start managing the 3rd site.

I'd recommend leaning on your local sales team to help validate your solution - this should be something they can/will do free of charge. Now technically they would charge you to help actually do the upgrade, but asking questions should be free.

You can find the Installation & Planning guide at the following location within Powerlink:

Home > Support > Technical Documentation and Advisories > Software ~ C ~ Documentation > ControlCenter > 6.0.x & Service Packs

This document is very detailed and should cover everything you need hardware specification wise. If you do not have ECC 6.0 registered with your site ID within Powerlink you may not be able to see the documentation.

Thank you !I found the pdf to be very extended and full of exceptions. that's why I wanted to ask for some help, because a best practice is most of the time quicker and better anyway. thanks for pointing me to the manuals.

Maybe someone from within EMC can provide you with a more summarized version - I unfortunately have not seen anything like you are after.

I still think the best option is to get your local EMC Sales Engineer involved - he/she should be able to get the right people to help you out and make sure your ECC environment is adequate to handle the units you want to manage.
