I believe Ad-Block Plus is good/useful. I use it when I don't have an avast alternative available: avast 8 included its own AdBlocker ("Powered by AdBlock Plus"). While no-longer offered in either avast 2014 nor 2015, my add-on seems to have survived these upgrades, and still appears to be functioning. Perhaps a full, up-to-date Ad-Block Plus might perform even better, but I have no plans to tinker with something that's working.
Ghostery has a good reputation... but I don't use it. Can't recall now if I tried once and decided not to keep it. But let's face it, I can't run every program I read about. I'm happy with my current program status.

Dale,
I don't know if this is in response to you, or purely a coincidence... but Bugbatter just posted on Facebook:
"For the person who was asking about Ghostery. Yes, I use it, and I love it!"
