I have decided to get rid of Norton and switch to another AV program. I went to the Symantec website to download the removal tool and I get an IE error stating that I am unable to access the website. Norton tech support had me try several different sites(which he said were up and running) and he was getting me to restart in safe mode, then I think he just hung up on me! (Now I know Im switching!) I have tried disabling my fire wall and anti spyware programs but still no luck. Can anyone tell me what might be the problem or how I can get their software? How important is it for me to use the removal tool vs. windows to remove Norton?
Open your ZA firewall program, and click on
Program Control on the left, then on
Programs tab at the upper right.
Make sure that
Generic Host Process for Win32 Services is enabled (has green check marks) under the
Access (both Trusted and Internet) and under the
Server (Trusted only) columns. If not, click on the
? or
X and change it to Allow. Then try accessing the website.
If IE7 is blocking your access, I would uninstall it via
Control Panel>
Add or Remove Programs. This will restore IE6. Try accessing that website again. You really do need to use that Norton removal tool before installing a new AV.
Thanks, but I tried that website along with some others that tech support gave me. It gives me the same error. I recenly upgraded to IE 7 so I dont know if there is something to look at there? Zone Alarm does keep telling me that it is blocking a DNS, but I tried disabling it and downloading with no luck. It lists the program as Generic Host Process for Win32 Service. Any ideas? Here is the error:

Thanks Joe. Uninstalling IE 7 worked. It took forever to connect to the download page, but I was finally able to download it. Is it always better to remove programs this way, or is this just a Norton thing?
Your welcome zbestwun. I had a ugly time with Nav2005, & thats when I found the tools. At that time Symantec had them hid quite well. :smileymad:
Gnardo: This is a Norton thing, I spend 2 + months dealing with that bloated Nav2005. If you enter Norton into the search feature, you will get thousands of posts about their bloatware & problems with it.
Joe & zbestwun, thanks for the work you & the other posters do in dealing with the problems in this & HiJack This forums. This is one of the forums I check daily.
