DELL DIMENSION 2300 starts to boot up, then the WinXp logo comes on the screen
then a blue screen flashes on the screen then the computer restarts.
Then I get the "do you want to start in safe mode" screen comes up.
I hit start normally and then the computer will show the WinXp logo again
and then repeat the problem again
Turn off Main Supply and turn it on and the same thing .
I tried booting on to safe mode and it just hang there
Last know configuration with same result
At times when luck is with me ! Yes I managed to get XP going !!
Checked /Virus scan/malware -None !! Since Hard disk is new !!
Took another hard disk and reload the OS and the same thing happen !
I used Belarc Advisor
1)Board :Mitac Int Corp.Dimension 2300
2)Bus clock 100 mgz
3)Bios:Mitac A02 08/26/2002
Am not sure if there is a firmware update on the above !
When you say "Blue Screen", do you mean a screen that comes up with a bunch of white text on it and an error code of somekind? If so, can you print back the text, just as it appears on your screen - let's see what we can GOOGLE out of it.
When I mean't was the window Xp start up screen keep going on and on and never stop ! Normally it will stop at the Login page and you key in password to get into the system.
I turn off the main supply and reboot same occur .
When I enter into safe mode it just hang there ! same with the rest of the options.
During reboot at times I see "funny" words that keep rolling non stop .Unable to read as it was too fast .
My suspicious could be the motherboard !! Run diagnotics all seems OK
Not sure if it is too costly to change the dammed motehr board !! Any idea the cost ??
To flash the bios might render the pc in-operational.
It would be a waste to dump it since it is a P4 2Ghz with a new 120 Maxtor HDD !
Yes there is no problem booting either from CD or floppy as I managed to install Win XP .
Initially was susipicious that the DVD rom was faulty and I did replaced with a brand new one ordered from Dell Singapore. Maxtor Hdd and DVD rom are brand new !
Installed Os on both the new and old HDD .Same problem.
It just keep looping non stop and never got onto the logon page at all .
HDD controller faulty !! Does this means changing the motherboard ??
What be the cost factor !! Any idea ??
For many years I have been using Dell both for my office and Home very quiet and rather stable to some extent till this problem crop up.
The first one sounds like a symptom of the "userinit" getting deleted by something. Can you boot directly into a cd? Like the windows operating system diskette - just like if you were installing windows? If you can, then i'd suspect a problem with the harddrive, or the hdd controller if seperate from the one used for the disk drives.
We really need to move this discussion to the hardware forums where others will see it, and provide you with more insight as to what the problem might be.
If your able to boot up from a CD-Rom and load windows onto a new harddrive, then the motherboard should be ok. Check to see if both the harddrive and cd-rw drives are all using the same IDE controller - which they should be. If they are, the calls are the same for all devices (some have special functions that others don't support), with the only difference being the low-level routines in the drivers as the recipient to the function calls. So the IDE controller should be working ok.
Did all this start happening after you installed a second internal drive? If so, try removing the second drive, and seeing if you have the same problem. If you don't, make sure the drive isn't defective and that your second disk is setup as a "slave" and not the "master" drive. Also, a single IDE "interface" only supports so many devices (not sure what would happen if you put more on there than should be).
Did you change or modify anything in your system's BIOS? What model computer is it, and how long have you had it?
