64 bit compatible?

I have a Dell XPS GEN 5 with a Pentium D dual core processor. System was purchased in 2005, running Windows XP Professional. I am considering upgrading Windows 7 Professional, and would like to know the quickest way to determine if the system is 64 bit compaitible? Any suggestesion wil be appreciated. Thanks. Rick

You'll need to check the CPU model number - post it here, or check with Intel.

Intel Pentium D 830 (3.0GHz) w/ dual core technology is what I have in the original documentation, is there a model number other than that? Thanks.

    rjn02,

Thank you for contacting the Dell Community Forum.  I wasn't able to find a Dell BIOS compatibility list, but your system should support a 64-bit operating system.  Windows 7 usually works best with the latest BIOS version, which is A04.  Since you are running A02, I would suggest updating to the latest BIOS (which can be obtained here), prior to installing that OS.

I've never updated a BIOS, but have read it can be risky? If I do update, is there any aspect of this that I need to especially careful with? Thanks.

If I'm interpreting correctly, the processor is good for 64 bit. Thank you!

Intel does have a disclaimer though mentioning support for 64 bit is subject to BIOS compatibility with 64 bit. Does Dell have a reference source by which this can be determined? The version on my BIOS is A02, 5/24/2005.

    Thanks again.
