First of all, where were you going to backup the files to and what files were you going to back up?

Were you trying to use the Windows Backup feature? If you have access to any Windows XP home CD, you can reinstall that backup program.

The only way is to use the XP CD. Contact dell for a replacement. Also, some of the extrenal hard drives comes with a backup program. Maxtor, LaCie, and other include it. Check before you purchase to ensure it does come with it. There are also some freeware programs that will backup/syncronize to a external source.
