UNSOLVED
Cannot install software, Vista not compatible.
I have not been able to install anything new on this new laptop because Vista is not recognized. I can't even view several websites because it refuses to recognize Vista. What can be done? This is ridiculous to have a brand new system and can't even view half of what is on the internet. I am thoroughly discusted with VISTA.

It stated my computer configuration was not supported and then it proceeded to give instructions as to how to fix it by choosing your Windows system (3.1, 95, 98, XP, etc), but Vista is not on it. It recommends you go to the Windows site and upgrade. So that was no help, because I have the latest & greatest Windows!I also am unable to install Family Tree Maker, World Atlas Interactive or others that have on my desktop. It could be me I guess, but I don't think so.
- No, it isn't you, it's a vista problem. Nothing works with it. You could try 'compatibility mode' but that doesn't always work either. I visited the local computer shop to buy a good modem to replace the poor performing modem in a friends new vista machine. That's when I found out that there are no vista drivers for Lucent modems. I talked to one of the techs while I was there. This shop custom builds computers and he said they are telling all their customers to avoid vista and stay with XP due to the lack of driver support and compatibility issues.

It appears to be a problem with third party apps, not Vista. I have installed everything I had on my XP machine, except Zone Alarm, on my Vista Home Premium. No special modes, no special fixes. Don't blame Vista, blame third party manufacturers that haven't bothered to update their software. Vista has been available to third party companies for quite a while. There is no excuse for them to have dropped the ball.- That is strange every web site I have visited works with Vista ( well actually IE7 ) if it doesn't that is the web sites problem. If software doesn't work with Vista it is the software and not Vista. Gee get a clue. Windows Vista has a very good driver base built in but there is no way they could have all drivers for every device known to man. Blame Lucent for the lack of drivers.pcgeek11

But so far no one has replied. Hopefully they will soon get their stuff up-to-snuff!Thank you for the reply.
- pcgeek11 I do have a "clue" as you kindly put it..only a clue. Even a pcgeek had to start somewhere and wasn't born knowing all. The only thing I know for certain is what I stated in my original message.As for yours opening every site, that's wonderful for you. I have not had that luxury yet. Perhaps the 3rd party applications will soon get onto the Vista wagon.
Microsoft is not blameless. They didn't make vista backward compatible with previous software and hardware drivers. ...And tell me why any hardware manufacturer or software company will be in a hurry to write updated drivers at their expense and provide that driver for free to fix their apps to work with vista when they can just force you to buy all new hardware and software? There is no excuse for microsoft when nothing works with a new operating system that they had five years to develop. Windows XP worked good when it came out and it was backward compatible with windows 95 software. It even ran some win 3.1 era software.

Vista does have a compatability mode to allow even more applications to work. I have even had numerous WinXP drivers work in Vista...The hardware manufacturers cannot force you to buy anything. Stick with XP if that is what you want to do, but Vista is a fine OS with loads of potential for the future.pcgeek11
