gotta say... i can't remember the last time i attempted a windows os install that hasn't taken at least 2-3 days of my time. most frustriating.
here's the current dilemma:
i CANNOT remove the read-only attribute from files on my hd!
i copied the files from the dell winxp cd... and as winxp copies these as read-only (also very stupid... who comes up with this sutff?) they're on my hd as read only.
but here's the kicker:
- unchecking the "readonly" attribute in the properties window apparently works... until i pull up the properties window only to find it doesn't
- ANY variation on attrib does NOT work. i've done attrib -a -s -h -r, done *.*, folder name, added /s and /d.... nothing.
is this some kind of super-strength readonly atrribute?
sorry... this kind of nonsense frustrates me to no end.
These are MS's solutions. The 'read only' box will still be checked, but greyed out on those folders. As far as I can see, you can still rename, delete, etc. those folders. The files inside those folders do not show 'read only' checked.
Make this bold text below, a batch file and it will set the attributes of ALL the files and folders on C:\ to
-r. Copy it to Notepad and 'save as'
att.bat
You are not the only one. I have been dealing with this problem for a while now. I would like to know if your setup is like mine...
Do you have multiple drives? Does this happen to all folders or only a select few? Have you or do you move or copy folders between drives when reformatting? If so, do you move or copy the directories?Do you have any partitions on your drive(s)?
What I have noticed is that the folders that are affected are those folders that are moved and copied from one partition to another. A little game that I will play when I am just frustrated at this behavior, is that I will bring up properties for the parent directory, un-fill the read-only box (I would say un-check, but it is not a check its a solid square), then if there are multiple files another box comes up saying apply changes to all files - I select no, then quickly click OK - Delete - and Enter. Sometimes, I am lucky and it will delete before the read-only is automatically reapplied.
If I do not feel like playing the M$ rain-deer games... I have a program called "ERD" that allows me to boot into a CD based windows type OS, and delete the folders that I need to.
I am also desperately trying to find the cause of this! After all that's how I found your post. :p
I want to know the registry fix or indicator of this problem...
