Consistent Freeze-Ups

Okay, well I'll start out by saying I didn't know exactly what forums to put this in because I don't know what exactly is causing the problem...

Ever since yesterday, I have began to get Freeze-Ups while playing Final Fantasy XI. It happened once yesterday and three times today (looks to be becoming more consistent). Now I know, that the game does take up a lot of CPU Usage while playing, but I have been playing the game for about 5 months and it has never happened. I have also owned my computer since Christmas (specs are below). I have never exerienced freeze-ups like these before.

At first I thought it was my computer overheating, but I've had it on longer then this before and nothing has happened. I now feel that it may be because of overuse considering I just got out of school for the summer. It could even be because of a virus that I got rid of two days (that I had to get rid of manually because my Norton subscription is out of date). I also downloaded the Dell Analysis tool and found that the file -- tfsnifs.sys -- may be causing me driver trouble. Overall, however, it seems that my CPU has been slow the last few days. Other than these things I really don't know.

Now the compuer I use is a Dimension 4700 with a 128mb PCI-Express Radeon X300 video card, the default sound card, 512MB DDR-RAM, 80GB Hard Drive and standard Samsung CD-RW drive. If anyone can give me any help on this I would be really greatful. If not I may have to reformat myself.

Thanks.

    1. Check Event Viewer (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer) for possible errors/suspicious messages.
    2. Make sure that the box doesn’t overheat: check for dust buildup and confirm that all fans (including video board if any) are working.
    3. If playing online, check your Internet connection.
    4. Scan for spyware and viruses.
    5. Update video driver and game software.
    6. Check for other updates.

    Good Luck!
