I have a Dimension 2400,running Windows Xp Home.My motherboard was replaced by a Dell technician a month after I received my system. He did not re-enter my asset tag before he left. Now my warranty has expired. Was told by Dell support online to download a utility to help fix the problem. When I try to run the program my DOS window opens then it suddenly closes. This happens with all my DOS applications. Can someone tell me what is going on!
The tag number is not a big (or even a small) issue. You have the physical tag on the PC and that's all you need. Not having the tag number in the PC will not make it work any different - it has nothing to do with PC operation.
As far as DOS applications, Windows XP only has a limited DOS emulator, it does not have full DOS and does not support many DOS applications.

I tried the fix that you gave me Osprey, but it didn't seem to work. The reason I need to have my Asset tag is so I can transfer the ownership of my PC to somebody else.
You say that the problem is the DOS window opens and suddenly closes with all your DOS commands. Rather than enter the commands in the Run box go to Start|Run, enter
cmd and OK. When you then enter the command at the command prompt the window will remain open.
Whether or not you transfer ownership of the system is not critically important. Since your system's warranty has expired, there is no benefit to the new owner in having the system registered in his/her name, as Dell provides no service for systems no longer under warranty.
