That's basically it. I boot with the Windows XP purple disc, press enter, press f8, and I see the one entire partition that has Windows XP one it. Well when I press D, to delete it, nothing happens. I want to format the hdd but I'm not sure how else to do it. Any help?
You could try another partition manipulation program like Linux (you can run a Live version that requires no installation ... they are very useful for debugging systems with problems like this) or fdisk.
You could also try putting the drive in another machine and trying disk manager.
Yeah, that's what I do. Set the dvd-drive as the first boot device in the BIOS. Then it says "Boot from CD. Press any key..." or something like that. Does a bunch of stuff and then I'm at that menu where I see the single partition.
But you're saying if it autostarts I'll see the exact same thing just not be able to do anything?
Are you sure you are booting from the XP CD? You will see the same sequence of screens if the CD autostarts from within Windows but will not be able to do an installation. See
this.
Can you tell me the information of the partition you wish to delete. I have the same problem before on my very first computer and I found out that I am deleting an unpartitioned space! hehehe.
You may need to use the fdisk utility as other options for deleting the partition
Well, it's just one partition that takes up the entire hard drive (That's still a partition, right?). Windows XP is installed on it. I'm not sure what other information you're looking for. How do I use the fdisk utility?
