Java Question

This concerns my XP Home desktop:

How safe is it to have Java enabled or is it best to keep it disabled?

Where in XP do you make this setting adjustment?

Thanks...................

There is no way to turn it off other than uninstall it.  There are no big security issues that Im aware of that would warrant that.  Kip

It is safer to use Sun Java.
    Please see:

    kippy50,

The recommendation on that page is "Scripting of Java applets" set to prompt. My system is set to enable that feature and I have used Microsoft VM for years without a problem.

    Denny,

Where do I locate it on my computer? If I don't have it where do I get it?

I do see something concerning Java applets listed under my security tab which is enabled, but is there anything more to this setting?

    Thanks............

    BrickYard,

Go to Start|Run, enter cmd and click OK. At the command prompt enter jview and press . If Microsoft VM is installed a screen will open showing the version you have installed at the top (the latest is 5.00.3810. If you don't have it you can download it from one of the two mirror sites here. You should download 5.00.3805 first then update it with 3810.
