Monitor screen blacks out intermittently

My system monitor screen blacks out intermittently for several seconds at a time, then comes back just fine. There is no loss of info or any other function. This happens regardless of what activity or application I'm running. In fact, it even happens with the screen saver !!

I have a Dimension 4550, running XP home. I use Spybot regularly as well as scan disc, and disc defrag . I have Blackice as my firewall and use Norton virus protection all of which I routinely update.

Any Ideas ??

I don't think that the hard drive would cause the monitor to black out. You could try running the Dell diagnostic for the monitor, if you have those.

is the monitor cable secured in the back of the monitor and into the computer?  Might be faulty connection or the cord.  When did this start happening?

How old is the monitor and does it feel hot ?

Yes, I checked all the connections - OK.  The system is 2 years old.  The monitor is warm but seems normal.  Problem started a month a so ago.  Black outs were only occasional, but now are becoming more frequent. During re-starts the screen blacks out twice, once after the Dell logo and then again after the desktop appears. Again, everything runs normally. I'm trying to determine if it's the monitor or in the harddrive.

    Thanks
