My Next Vista Problem - Temporary freezing/lockups
Hello again,
I'm not sure whats causing this, but it seems that occasionally my new Vista setup will have these long pauses, like when copying a file from one HDD to another, where there is no activit of the computer at all....the mouse does not lock up, and the start button will not work....there may be a lockup for as much as 60 seconds, then all of a sudden everything kicks back in and runs. I'm having trouble re-creating the issue, becasue if I try to re-copy the same file, it may not happen again.
Under the performance monitor, i see a lot of warnings about system performance being effected, but there is no real info on the cause.
Here's the setup:
XPS 700 Intel Core2Duo XV6700
4GB Ram
2 Nvidia 7950GTXs
1x160 GB Raptor Drive (Main OS)
2x75GB Raptor Drives in Raid 0
1x400GB Media Drive
Vista Ultimate
Using Stock NVIDIA Driver for the 7950GTX
Latest BIOS
Creative Labs Vista Beta Driver for X-Fi
Nvidia Media Shield on the DELL downloads page doesnt solve the issue....
Can this possible have anything to do with the drivers for the nforce chipset? I know that the 700 is SUPPOSED to be the 590 chipset, but many belioeve that it's a 570 chipset. There are no drivers on the DELL site, and I understand these chipsets are supposed to be supported "out of the box."
So.....anywho, what do ya all think is causing the problem, and/or where should I be looking that might be able to diagnose it properly?
The XPS 400 uses Intel chipsets, the Nvidia update will not work for you.
ajbrutico, it could be the dual video cards, I would try removing one to see what happens. There is no support for SLI yet. I really wish Nvidia would get with the program on this Vista issue!
For what its worth, I did a system install, and created a restore point after everything new that I installed. After Media Shield was installed, the freezes began. I did a system restore to righ before the software was installed, and so far, I have not seen the issue yet. Maybe media shield did it after all. Maybe last time, I installed media shield without realizing.....
I'm gonna leave it without the media shield program for a couple days and see what happens -- I just can't shut down properly :(
I had the same problem. I have an XPS 410 configured with:
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66
4GB Ram
RAID 0 500GB
NVidia 256 7000LE
Dual tuner TV card
etc.
First I upgraded my XPS410 to the ATI Radeon x1650 Pro 512 video card, but that didn't change anything and I still had the freezes. Then I thought that it must be hardware, so I started unplugging something, then using my computer for a long period of time (watched movies) to see if what I had unplugged was causing the freeze.
Throught this, I've narrowed it down to the USB hookup for my new Dell 24" widescreen Ultra-sharp HD Monitor. When I unplugged the USB cable that provides the USB connection to the ports built-in to the monitor, I no longer had the freezing issue. This freezing occured when the ports on the monitor were hooked up, even when nothing was connected to the monitor via USB. It's definitely the monitor's builtin USB ports/media card reader that's causing the issue.
So now, I'm working with Dell to get that resolved, possibly replacing the monitor. Hopefully this fixes the issue.
I hope that this might help those of you experiencing the same lockup/freezing issue.
Same exact problem here with my XPS 410. I've installed and reinstalled like 5 times now. First it seemed to be happening after I updated the drivers but this last time I didn't update or install ANYTHING and it's still doing it. I tested it by playing Solitaire right after the install and even that caused it. Yesterday I got an error that said "The driver stopped responding" and that it "resoloved itself" or something like that. Today after leaving the computer on and coming back to the Win Main menu it was scrolling up and down saying it was readjusting something. Im going to try installing the drivers for the moniter and see if thers a difference. *bunch of typos in here because it's already froze twice while trying to post this so im tryping way too fast now lol
No one getting this error on an Nvidia Motherboard? We need to discuss this on the XPS 700, beacus it is an nforce chipset and requires nvidia's media shield.
I tagged a message to the presumed error in the event manager, ill post the error details next time it shows.
